How Gomo Learning and Resuscitation Council UK are helping NHS clinicians return to the frontline

A trio of Learning Technologies Group companies—Gomo, LEO Learning, and Instilled—recently united with Resuscitation Council UK to provide critical eLearning resources that will be used in the fight against COVID-19.

In a period where many of us have been left feeling powerless, the teams at Learning Technologies Group (LTG) have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to assist with the UK’s coronavirus response in a small but meaningful way. LTG has provided a program of support including guidance on content authoring in Gomo's eLearning software and a free six-month, 100,000+ user license for Instilled by PeopleFluent—the new Learning Experience Platform (LXP) launched last year—to long-term LEO Learning client Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK).

Delivering in (just over) 4 days

RCUK has an important role to play in promoting high-quality, scientifically-informed resuscitation guidelines to other professional organizations and charities. RCUK was approached by a key member of the Resuscitation Department at the new Nightingale Hospital at ExCeL London with a request to provide learning content for the wave of returning clinicians currently being mobilized as part of the UK government’s coronavirus response.

RCUK contacted LEO Learning’s Managing Director, James Greenwood, on Wednesday 25 March with these urgent requirements: With the first of the Nightingale Hospitals due to be opened during the following week, RCUK needed to be able to launch eLearning content that was fully fit for purpose by the morning of Monday 30 March.

LTG teams were only too happy to jump into action. Staff from Gomo, LEO Learning and Instilled all came together over the weekend and across global time zones in order to make this a reality.

Courses tailored to NHS returners and COVID-19

The five-module ‘adult resuscitation eLearning’ course was adapted from existing RCUK course material and has been adjusted specifically for an audience of former professional clinicians returning to deal with patients affected by COVID-19. Taking advantage of Gomo’s cloud-based eLearning authoring capabilities, all content is mobile-responsive and allows downloads of key charts—including a specific algorithm for COVID-19 life support application—ensuring that key information can be referenced in the field.

In addition to Gomo authoring, Instilled was identified by the LTG team as a key component in addressing some specific challenges RCUK was facing:

  • Ease of use for all users: Clinician learners who may be unfamiliar with modern learning systems needed to be able to use the platform, and both learning designers and subject matter experts needed to learn and deliver content quickly.
  • Support for self-service login: Large volumes of previously unengaged learners needed to be able to access the platform. Self-service login made this process quick and easy.
  • Overall flexibility: With such a tight schedule, the exact format and source of materials couldn’t be assured. However, Instilled is compatible with a wide range of media types and would allow for the use of resources from outside RCUK’s existing content ecosystem.
  • Dynamic scalability: As more hospitals across the UK are opened via Project Nightingale and more clinicians take up the call to arms, the number of users is likely to rise dramatically.

Life-saving training

Everyone at Gomo and our sister companies at LTG are proud to be even a small part of the response to the current medical effort. While we sincerely hope that this training will be required as rarely as can be wished for, we’re grateful for the opportunity to provide it in a way that will help those saving lives get back to work with a minimum of fuss.
